Empower Your Employees

July 14, 2019

When I started in the trades back in the early '80's (dating myself here)... the attitude was a lot different. It was a ''tough love'' and ''survive not thrive'' learning environment which permeated the workplace.

Newbies were often targeted by seasoned crews, creating a negative experience. Verbal abuse and inappropriate humour was often tolerated as part of the job.

There were lots of bullies around the job sites in those days but it seems to have steadily improved.  ''Bullies'' still exist, however; there is a lot more awareness and intolerance around active bullying here in Canada and the U.S.

It is an Employers obligation to be a good role model for employees. In a study conducted by the Workplace Bullying Institute, 37 per cent of workers have been bullied, with 57 per cent of the targets being women. The majority of bullies (72%) are people in positions of authority.

Empower employees by following these suggestions:

  1. Acknowledge employee achievements.
  2. Open your door to employees.
  3. Give more compliments than criticism.
  4. Criticize constructively.
  5. Understand what motivates each employee.
